A Devastating Fire in Kamalapur Slum

Staff Reporter, Dhaka, 8 May : Over 50 people were injured and at least a child died in a serious fire at Kamalapur slum in the capital yesterday. The fire brigade authority suspects that the cause of fire may be a kerosene stove.

It is suspected that the fire originated at about 5 pm. A girl named Sima (14) was seriously burnt. She was taken to hospital but later died. More than 2000 people live in the slum. The fire spread very rapidly and it burnt almost 20 homes and five shops. The local people came forward to put out the fire. They started throwing water over the fire with buckets. Getting call, the 5 units of fire brigade reached the spot quickly. But the roads are so narrow that it was difficult for them to work. The slum dwellers tried to save their belongings but they failed. All their belongings were burnt to ashes. The fire brigade authority with the help of local people could control fire after 2 hours.

The affected people have now become foodless, clothless and shelterless. Now they are living under the open sky. The State Minister, Rouf, Chief of Police, Nurul Huda and many high officials visited the spot. The minister declared the government support for the affected people. Many people lost their everything and have become homeless, foodless and clothless. Now  they need immediate relief matarials.

A Devastating Fire in a Garment Factory

 Staff Reporter, Savar, 10 January: A devastating fire broke out in a garment factory unit of the Partex group at Ashulia, Savar leaving at least 120 workers and employees dead. The cause of the fire in the factory is still under the dark. 

Smoke engulfed the whole building as a result of which the people inside the building could not come out of the building in spite of their best efforts. The Fire Brigade and Civil Defense rushed to the spot immediately to douse the fire. The Bangladesh Army, Bangladesh Air Force also sent their personnel and helicopters to rescue the people. Even the people of all walks of life joined the rescue operation spontaneously. They helped the workers to come out of the building. After working hard for nearly 8 hours, the Fire Brigade and Civil Defense in collaboration with other agencies succeeded in putting out the fire. Hasina Begum (25), a worker of the factory said, ‘The production of the factory was going on in full swing. Suddenly we heard a huge sound and black smoke filled our room. Then I started running to save my life’. The fire took away 31 lives and left many others injured. The wounded were admitted into different hospitals and clinics of the city.

Trade and Commerce Minister, Abul Hasan, local MP and other high officials visited the spot. The Minister declared 10 lac taka for each dead person and 2 lac taka for each injured worker. The government has already formed a 3 member inquiry committee to find out the cause of the fire.
